    Buff Top: A stone that is faceted along the pavilion and polished with a dome on top, not unlike a cabochon.
  2. Cabochon
    Cabochon: A stone with a flat bottom and domed, smoothly polished top. This is typically used for opaque or translucent stones and stones with patterns of color, like opal.
  3. Center Drilled
    Center Drilled: Used on stones so they can be strung as beads.
  4. Checkerboard
    Checkerboard: A cutting technique that creates diamond shaped facets along the stone's top and sides to create a checked pattern.
  5. Diamond Cut
    Diamond Cut: The stone is cut similarly to a diamond brilliant cut to maximize its sparkle.
  6. Faceted
    Faceted: A technique to give the stone brilliance by cutting flat sides into the stone to reflect light. Most finish gemstones are faceted based on specifically developed faceting diagrams given the stone's final shape.
  7. Fantasy
    Fantasy: A departure from traditional faceting, fantasy cut stones employ artistic grooves, optic dishes, and concave facets to create a unique final look for the stone.

Certificate


A gemstone certificate, also known as a grading report, is issued by an accredited independent gemological laboratory. In addition to the gem's carat weight and measurements, a certificate includes grades for the stones's color, clarity, and origins.
